When established, first interment, where land orginated, etc: The Clifford Public Cemetery property was purchased from James Mathewson on October 1, 1886 and is located north of Clifford on highway #9 on Lot 33, Concession 18 of Howick Township covering an area of 3.25 acres."Early family plots had fences around them and each family cared for its own plot with some having hedges while other could have an iron fence around them."
In 1947 John and Hannah Taylor donated the stone cemetery gates and iron fence (a few years ago the fence was removed).
A Chapel was built in 1987 and has become a valuable asset.
The new section of the cemetery was purchased in 1955 and was opened in 1991 giving the Clifford Public Cemetery a total acreage of 6.42. The old section of the Clifford Cemetery has no plots for sale with interments for those who have purchased lots years ago.
The Clifford & District Horticultural Society built and donated the wonderful stone planted that grace the entrances of the Clifford Cemetery plus take care of the flower bed behind the Chapel.
A single grave site in the old cemetery was 36" wide by eight' long while the new section measurement is 39" by 10' long.1
