Help us reach our census goal!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to PROOFREAD!

Please take a moment and review our Proofreader's Handbook before signing up.

If you are only willing to volunteer "from home" be sure you are volunteering for 1851, 1901 or 1911 only. These are the only census years available to proofread entirely "from home" (unless you are willing to visit your local library or family history centre to copy a census from microfilm to proofread at home).

The requirements for volunteering are:

  • pre-1851* - access to microfilm
  • 1851 - access to the images at Library & Archives Canada and/OR access to microfilm
  • 1861* - access to microfilm
  • 1871* - access to microfilm
  • 1891* - access to microfilm
*At times there are copies available. IF they are available this census will be listed on our Volunteer From Home page. If a census is NOT on that page, you will have to gain access to the census yourself.

Ready? Just fill out this form and our Volunteer Co-ordinator will contact you shortly.
