Q: Where did the Loyalists settle in Ontario?
A: All over. Loyalists, like most new settlers, basically settled wherever land was available. Primary areas of settlement were along the St. Lawrence River and the shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Large settlements of Loyalists can be found in the areas of extending East from Northumberland County to Quebec, and in the counties of Haldimand, Norfolk, Lincoln and Welland.

Q: How can I find the names of the United Empire Loyalists?
A: Two places -- The UELAC (United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada) and the Land Grant / Land Peitition microfilms. The UELAC documents all known UEL's by descendants who join the organization claiming to be descended from a UEL. You can learn more about the UELAC by visiting their website (see links ). Land Grant / Land Petition microfilms are copies of the actual petitions and grant used to get land in Ontario. Most UEL claimants would state their UEL status in their petition.

Q: My GGGGgrandparents emigrated to Canada from Amsterdam, Holland. They were in Ontario for about 2 years before moving on to the US. Are there any records that can be searched for the 1810-1822 period to find out which port they landed in, and where they originated? We've always been told that they were from Ireland, but they had sailed from Amsterdam
A: I would try LDS passenger emigration lists to start. Records for that time period are hit and miss. You might have more luck focusing on their life in the USA - did they apply for naturalization? What birth place did their death certificate provide? Where they the subject of any newspaper articles or biographies? Start from their deaths and work backwards. Be sure to focus on any known siblings as well - they may give a clue as to place of birth.

Q: I am trying to verify that an ancestor of mine, who was a personal representative of the Sovereign and acting out the duties of Canada's Keeper of Customs for (Quebec and Ontario) Between the years of 1820 1830. Are there any government or private resources that contain information about who was the head customs officer for this period for Quebec and Ontario? The individual’s name was Sir Richard Cross.
A: Probably! As Canada was not yet a country you might find these records are kept in England (see the UK National Archives: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk)
