  • NOT a query page
  • NOT a research service
  • NOT a place locator
  • NOT a miracle worker!!

Looking for a town, city, or place in Ontario? Visit the Ontario Locator

PLEASE if you have a question about a particular County, District, or place in Ontario. Visit the County/District GenWeb site pertaining to that area. There's a very, very good chance you will find your answer there. Thank you!

    1. Q: I am trying to find more information about an article that appeared in St Catherine's Journal, Ontario, 10/9/1859. The article was about the funeral of a child of an Oswego (New York) Irishman. (I'm trying to find the name of that gentleman.) Do you know of a good way to find a reprint of this paper?
      A:
If the newspaper was microfilmed you should be able to reprint the article. Head to your local library and ask if they have "Union List of Newspapers Held by Canadian Libraries" published by the National Library of Canada. It gives a listing of the newspapers available.

    2. Q: I need help with copyright laws in Ontario, for newspaper obituaries. I have transcribed numerous obits/bmds and want to understand if there are any copyright laws I need to worry about when posting the information on my website. I was not charged for the information (only photocopy costs) and I am not charging for the information. I would obviously site the source with the records...but do I need to worry about anything?
      A:
Courtesy of Allan via Bryan Cantley of the Canadian Newspaper Association - Copyright subsists in any original work. An obituary can contain original work unless it is a basic "John Doe of such and such address died on January 21, 2006". Even though copyright may subsist in an obituary that merely means that the original expression cannot be copied to any substantial degree. The facts in the obituary however can be copied or repeated.

    3. Q: My fathers grandfather came from Sweden to Canada 1911, how can I find his now living relatives? (Per Lindberg was born 1853, he died 1913 in Fort William, Ont, Canada).
      A:
Through obituaries (they list who's still living & where - follow the obits from old to new), city directories, phone books, funeral records. See our
Check List and try any resource that would apply to those still living.

    4. Q: Where can I look for death/obituary information province-wide for early 1930's death information?
      A:
Newspapers & death registrations. Newspapers are accessible for all years depending upon the newspaper itself. See
Newspapers for more information. Death registrations are available at LDS Family History Centres worldwide 72 years after the event. Deaths that have occurred within the past 72 years are not available to the public unless you are next-of-kin or have power of attorney for the deceased. See Death Records for more information.

    5. Q: Would like to get news articals form the kingston whig stander newspaper for the year 1985
      A:
      Visit the
Frontenac CountyGenWeb as Kingston is located within this county. There you may find a list of newspapers and from that a contact address. If not, try a search on Sympatico or Yahoo . Or you could call Information at 1-613-555-1212. Be aware that long distances charges and a small fee do apply (usually under depending on your telephone service)

    6. Q: Would records still exist of any search for a person (teenage girl) who disappeared from her home and family shortly after 1891? How may I find them?
      A:
[From Forebears Research] -- The Toronto Police Archives (accessible through the Metro Police I believe) should be able to help. If she was a minor, then the
Children's Aid currently may know what existed then in this capacity. Beyond that, if she was found dead at some point there should be a coroner's report. There may be some school records from the time that could have useful details although not specifically to do with the search, rather info on her personally.
You should also check the newspapers in the area where she resided in 1891, as well obituaries, wills and other such events of the remaining family members.
