When leaving Scotland abt.1770, George left as “Murdoch”. Upon arriving in New York, his surname appears as “Mordoff”, and it is this spelling that appears in military records (Kings Militia and UEL claims, land transfer records, etc. until the mid-1800s. There are a combination of Murdoch, Murdock and Mordoff spellings all related to the same family in an around the Napanee & Kingston areas.
