Yonge Street is a street, not a "place". It first began in 1813 when Lt-Gov Simcoe ordered that a strip of land in York be cleared for a road. The road was ready for traffic in 1816 and officially named 'Yonge Street'. Today Yonge Street extends from Toronto Harbour on Lake Ontario to Rainy River on the Ontario-Manitoba Border, making it the longest road in the world at 1896 kilometres.
