Algoma District

(Geographic District)
Currently Exists
Former Location**: Rupert's Land

LOCATION:Ontario (Province of)

First inhabitants were from the Algonkin Nation. Algoma District has a unique place in history as it was the location of a visit from the first white man to enter the area that is now Ontario. Etienne Brule, a french explorer, visited in the early 1600's. It was also the first area to be accurately mapped due to its importance for the fur trade. Besides its abundance of furs, Algoma was also known for its minerals and lumber. Algoma became a Judicial District in 1858. There is only one city in this district - Sault Ste. Marie.
